Is Social Media affecting your credit?
Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and the others have changed the way people share online information with anybody on the net. Though these sites offer various fascinating features to keep you hooked on, there is a flip side to these sites as well; anything you share online is out there in the universe permanently and forever. As a result, all of these networking sites pose the biggest problem of personal identity theft. These new types of thieves rob you of your most valuable and essential thing–your identity!
In case you keep your profile âPublicâ to all, there is a high probability that your online conversations are being watched keenly by individuals or organizations. In order to make more accurate business decisions, creditors collect and then analyze anything you or your friends in your network share, update, tweet or comment. Usually, their aim is to understand your behavior pattern so that they can easily sell their product/service without spending much on advertisements and marketing.
Another disadvantage of such theft is that creditors may decide your credibility depending upon how people in your network handle their account. Generally it is assumed that if your friends are responsible cardholders; you will be one too! Not only this, your loan application gets accepted easily if you have rich online friends!
Therefore, your primary concern should be to keep yourself and your family safe while still taking all the advantages that social networks offer. Here are some simple tips:
- First and foremost turn off all your public settings
- Do not accept invitations from profiles until you know the person personally
- Be absolutely aware of what you write i.e. do not make anything public that you do not want people to know
- Regularly take an inventory of all your social networking sites and delete people or information that you think
- can potentially damage your identity in the eyes of a creditor or an employer
While financial institutions and organizations that gather your data insist that the idea for watching online conversations is to increase the odds of you getting credit, however, whatever you reveal on the net can have unintentional consequences. Therefore, it is highly advisable that you adopt the above tips and also encourage your peers for safe networking. Lastly but not the least always remain updated about online security related matters. Enjoy social networking!
